What’s surface flashover?

Surface flashover refers to the phenomenon of penetrating breakdown discharge formed at the interface between insulating materials and medium such as air and vacuum. Since the discharge voltage of surface flashover is much smaller than the breakdown discharge voltage of insulating materials, surface flashover has become one of the main forms of electrostatic discharge on the surface of spacecraft in space environment, which poses a serious threat to the safety of spacecraft. Therefore, it is highly valued for its research and testing.

In particular, in view of the complexity of space environment in which spacecraft are located, Taiwan has also established a spacecraft surface charging simulation system, and used polyimide, a common insulating material for spacecraft, as a typical research object to study the surface flashover characteristics of polyimide and other new materials in low-pressure environments, providing a basis for the design of spacecraft electrostatic protection.

However, the established low-pressure environment surface flashover test device has the problem of being unable to control the vacuum degree with high precision, which will bring large errors to the surface flashover measurement, and will also cause serious impacts on the research of influencing factors such as desorbed gas, roughness, and chemical changes, which is not conducive to the accurate evaluation of surface flashover performance and related factors in the process of new material research and development.

 

In view of the problems in existing surface flashover test device, the user proposed to carry out technical transformation of the vacuum control system of the test device. Therefore, this article proposed a technical transformation plan by using KaoLu’s Proportional Pressure Regulator based on the user's technical requirements to reach accurate simulation of low-pressure environment within the full vacuum range and effectively improve accuracy of the surface flashover performance test.
